Electrifying the Global Textile Services Industry with Alsco
The global textile services industry is a vast market that encompasses garment manufacturing, inventory management, delivery and logistics, and care and maintenance. And with an extensive footprint comes a negative environmental impact. According to climate action consultancy Climate Seed, the industry emits 1.7 million tons of CO2 annually, accounting for 10 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.
As a result, many textile service providers are exploring new ways to implement more sustainable business practices. One way is the deployment of battery-electric vehicles from Xos.
Alsco Uniforms, a leading global uniform and linen rental company, recently took delivery of 30 battery-electric vehicles from Xos across five of its California facilities. Founded in 1889, the Salt Lake City-based company is one of the oldest and largest textile services companies in the world and currently serves 355,000 customers across 180 locations. The deployment of Xos vehicles kickstarts the company’s transition to battery-electric operations among its fleet of delivery vehicles. The 30 vehicles have been deployed across Alsco’s facilities in Santa Rosa, San Jose, San Francisco, Concord, and Los Angeles.
In addition to transitioning to electric vehicles, Alsco’s sustainability efforts include a reduction of water use by 50%, the elimination of paper waste by implementing an online account management system, and an investment in American-made fabrics with life cycles of up to 80% longer than imported linens.
With Alsco, Xos now serves four of the top uniform rental fleets in the world. With predictable and return-to-base routes, consistent payload, and length of delivery routes, uniform and linen rental delivery is an excellent application for electrification.
